Usually, I talk about ways to CUT costs, save money or invest, but today I want to talk about the Best Money Spent in the AE household year to date. We try to spend on things that we truly enjoy and cut the rest of the crap out. This year a lot of our cash has been flowing to not so fun things….Medical Bills, Car Repairs (stupid nails in street) and a hefty tax bill in April.
Time has also been at a premium, between full-time work for both of us, raising a child and longer commute times due to road construction on our way to/from work (seriously can’t wait until it’s done) we are a busy bunch. It’s no surprise that I am so excited about the first item on the list…….
My New Love
It’s not little AE (although she is the best, I love her to death and constantly makes me smile) it’s this little Robot.
We (well I) named him DJ ROOMBA (not original, thank you Parks and Rec)
We are one week in, and this little Robot is cleaning its way into a permanent resident!
The best part, we used refunded credit card points from a trip we had to cancel earlier this year to buy it. Getting the points back was a Pain.In.The.Ass. But at least it will be paying time dividends for the foreseeable future. This is technically free but costs about $360 brand new.
We had talked about buying one of these for a few months, and once we found out it has WiFi and can be controlled from our cell phone it was a done deal. It runs on our main floor every night primarily cleaning up dog hair. I have also thrown it into all the bedrooms and shut the door this week and get a notification on my phone when it’s done.
Crumbs falling off the counter – no problem!
Now for something less dorky and more fun!
My amazing wife went above and beyond for my first fathers day and bought me a fishing kayak. I have had it out about 10 times since she got it and love the peace and quiet as I paddle around. I need to up my kayak fishing game, however, been having trouble landing fish. More practice I guess.
The only thing it is missing is a cup holder.
Cost – $300
We haven’t done a long vacation since Mrs. AE got pregnant but have been able to do some 4-5 day trips to the lake and we have another one coming up this weekend with family! Finding time to get out of the city and boat, fish and spend the entire day outside. Much needed.
Having family to pass Little AE around while I am out on the boat is a win as well.
All in all our 3 cabin trips cost about $900 (VRBO – Vacation Rental By Owner)
We also booked a quick trip out to Vegas in September for some poolside fun (Credit Card points again). This will be the first time we both are away from our daughter overnight at the same time. We will hit a fancy-ish restaurant one night for Mrs. AE’s birthday and do the Vegas thing for a few days.
“Free” flight and hotel, but gambling, poolside beer, and food will be pretty expensive!
It is interesting to look back on the purchases you make over the course of 8-9 months and pick out the best money spent. For us, things that stand out, we will do more of. Great way to focus your spending on what actually matters.
What is your Best Money Spent this year?
